Against this backdrop, Brumalia Hardware has grown over the past thirty eight (38) years to become one of the most successful hardware enterprises island wide, operating under the name of “Brumalia House”.
In 1986, John Chin’s son, Howard, joined the business, bringing to it a fresh injection of innovative ideas. In 1991, Mr. Chin retired from the business and as part of his succession plan, he appointed his three sons to the Board of Directors. New and strong leadership for Brumalia House would now be provided by Howard Chin – Managing Director, Joseph Chin – Purchasing and IT Director and Gerry Chin – Operations Director.
The Company’s success can be attributed to the decision by Management to diversify the product portfolio to include more viable activities. The Company has moved in to the financial services business providing services such as:
- Foreign exchange trading (through three(3) Cambio locations that are licensed by the Bank of Jamaica).
- Money Transfer Services – Western Union (two(2) locations)
- Remittance Services – Money Gram
- Cheque Changer
- Other Services – bills payments
More recently, Management formed a strategic alliance with the “Do It Best” giant hardware cooperative based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This will enable Brumalia to improve their operational system, store design and display and carry a wider product range representing most of the major manufactures. The business is expected to expand into other locations in more developed areas such as Kingston and Portmore and Montego Bay by 2008. What follows is a detailed plan covering the business model, financial projections and market and industry analysis for this business.
Over the years, Brumalia has also embarked on a strategy to strength their position in the real estate market by acquiring commercial properties within Mandeville. Currently, the business has three(3) large commercial properties which are being rented commercially. Some of their large tenants include Shopper’s Fair Supermarket, Palace Cineplex, Domino’s Pizza, Tastee Patties, Ping’s Fabrics and G.K.R.S. In addition to all this, the impact of rising real estate values over the years has strengthened Brumalia’s real estate position.
Statement of Purpose The purpose of this document is to outline the strategic business plan of Brumalia Hardware Limited for the period 2005-2010 for the consolidation and debt rescheduling and the funding of capital expansion programmes.
- We are the oldest hardware business in Mandeville - founded in 1941.
- We are family owned and operated by the Chins since 1968
- The original Brumalia House store was a landmark at the corner of Perth Road and Ward Avenue in Mandeville.
- We have recently renovated to serve our customers better, with a new and improved store layout and more spacious aisles. We offer a wider variety of products, including home and garden, paints and accessories, home improvement products, automotive products and more.
- We have put in additional parking and are now open on Sundays.
- We are now affiliated with Do It Best Corp.- a giant home hardware Co-op out of the USA. This enables Brumalia House to be on the cutting edge of the hardware and home improvement industry and to have better access to a wider variety of products and more competitive prices.
- Brumalia has its own brand of quality paint-Brumalia House Paints “quality and affordability in a bucket”. Our Color palette is varied and exciting. We will soon be installing a paint color mixing system.
- Shopping at Brumalia can earn you cash or merchandise with our Brumalia Brawta Points Card. Points are earned with every purchase made and accumulated points can be later converted to cash or merchandise. We also have gift cards.
- Our well trained Customer Service Representatives go the extra mile to make shopping at Brumalia a pleasant experience, with emphasis on fast and efficient service.
- Our in-store Cambio- Cambio Brumalia- offers fast and efficient service, in safe, private and pleasant surroundings. We buy and sell all major currencies at very competitive rates.
